Phil Roe – Disingenuous?

Reprint of an article appearing in a recent Guest Commentary in the Johnson City Press;  penned by Judy Garland:

U.S. Rep. Roe shouldn’t patronize his constituents or insult our intelligence. His e-mails frequently include a survey question with yes, no, and I’m not sure responses. This is the last one:

Do you support Chairman Ryan’s 2012 budget proposal?

  • Yes. This budget will cut spending in real ways and put us on the road to prosperity.
  • No. It’s not realistic to try to balance the budget in 10 years.
  • I’ not sure at this time.

This would be funny were my representative not asking me to suspend reason. My answer is no, but not because I despair of balancing the budget. My answer is no because:

  • I oppose privatizing Medicare and Medicaid.
  • tax breaks for the rich should be eliminated, not increased a further 10 percent
  • subsidies to corporate health insurance, agribusiness, big banks, big oil and big coal should be eliminated
  • the defense budget should be cut significantly
  • we should get out of Iraq and Afghanistan as soon as possible
  • too many economists say Ryan’s tax cuts for the wealthy negate the savings he forsees from gouging the poor and middle class.

To present Ryan’s assault on the poor and middle class and his windfall plan for the rich as our only hope is ludicrous. But our Phil Roe feel for it, voting with Ryan to abandon Medicare recipients to the mercy of Big Insurance and voting with Ryan for more tax breaks for the rich.

Condescension and scheming are lousy tools. Unless he’s willing to ask questions that elicit meaningful feedback, he should stop pretending to care what we think.

We mustn’t be distracted by word tricks. We mustn’t excuse or forget what he’s done.
